Minnesota’s Oldest Abortion Clinic Closes Permanently

The Robbinsdale Clinic, Minnesota’s oldest abortion facility located near Minneapolis, has permanently closed after more than 50 years of operation. Financial difficulties, including insufficient insurance reimbursements, led to the closure. An internet company has a purchase agreement to buy and demolish the building to construct a data center, pending city approval.

Key Points:

  • Historical Significance: Established in the early 1960s as a family practice, the Robbinsdale Clinic began providing abortion services in 1973 following the Roe v. Wade decision.
  • Financial Challenges: The clinic faced significant financial difficulties due to insufficient insurance reimbursements, particularly from state-funded Medicaid plans, which covered less than half the cost of care. A fundraiser launched last summer aimed to raise $300,000 but only garnered about $43,000, contributing to the decision to shut down.
  • Community Impact: Over its decades of operation, the clinic performed an estimated 60,000 abortions. Pro-Life Action Ministries, active in sidewalk counseling at the clinic since the mid-1980s, reports that hundreds of lives have been saved through their efforts.
  • Future Plans for the Site: An internet company has a purchase agreement to buy and demolish the building to construct a data center, pending city approval.

This closure marks a significant change in Minnesota’s reproductive health services landscape.
